ENGINEERING.

The Faculty of Engineering is the Faculty possessing the greatest number (77) of graduates, and it is satisfactory to state that so far as is known none of them are without satisfactory employment. The development of engineering works in China has been retarded both by the world war and by present unsettled conditions, but whenever tranquility is re- established there would appear to be room for indefinite expansion. While the aim of the Faculty bas been defined above as the training of thoroughly qualified theoretical engineers, no greater force must be given the word "theoretical" than that impliet in the recognition of the fact that the education of every engineer requires to be completed by actual experience in the field or in the shops. In this connection it may be observed that, in addition to the purely instructional plants, a power-station which serves the needs of the estate is fully utilised for iustructional purposes, and that recent donations or tentative promises of assistance have been forthcoming after personal inspection of the work of the department,

The most pressing need of the Department was found by the University Commission of 1920 to be that of better workshop accommodation, and this need it will be possible to meet through the generous contribution of $100,000 by Sir Robert Ho Tung. The existing Engineering accommodation is,
